6 Night Sail

Where could Sally have gone? Sam looked back down the alley and froze. Bert and Judy were coming towards him. Pretending to look at the trinkets for sale he saw them enter a door behind one of the stalls. Sally must be there, waiting for them.

Sam went home. He now knew where Sally was meeting Judy and Bert and he had one of the diamonds, evidence which he would later give to his father. As he went into the kitchen he was surprised to see Christopher waiting for him.

‘We are sailing tonight Sam can you be ready?’ Sam packed a small bag. When they arrived at Hebe Haven Scott was getting the boat ready.

‘Come on you two help me carry the stores.’ Sam took the carton of drinks and Christopher carried the fresh drinking water. Scott had filled the small fridge with food. The small cupboards were full of tins, packets of biscuits, tea and coffee. When they had finished sorting themselves out they set sail. It was early evening as they ate a supper of sausage and beans. The sun was beginning to set over the distant mountains.

‘We’ll need the mast light on’ said Scott. ‘Could you put it on for me Sam?’ Sam looked up at the tiny mast light. It looked as if it was already on. He checked the switch.

‘It’s already on Scott.’

‘It can’t be.’ Scott was puzzled he was careful about turning it off after use to save the battery.

There was a fresh breeze and the boat was picking up a good speed. Scott steered out to sea with one hand on the tiller. He looked up to find that the mast light had gone out.

‘Can you hold the tiller Sam? I need to change the bulb on the mast.’ Sam took hold of the tiller. He had sailed before but never at night. The waves washing onto the bow were dark and had a sinister look.

‘Christopher, do you want a turn with the tiller?’

‘In a minute I’m making coffee.’

Scott buckled the tool kit around his waist and started to climb the mast. Two spare bulbs were in the deep pocket of his sailing jacket. Halfway up he felt a few spots of rain. As he reached the top something in the distance caught his eye. A dark cloud was moving across the water. Scott knew a squall when he saw one. He quickly changed the bulb.

‘Sam can you try the switch now?’ Sam tried the switch. There was still no light. Christopher put his head round the door.

‘Coffee’s ready, sea looks a bit choppy.’ The boat suddenly rolled the foresail slapped in the strengthening wind. Christopher fell down the steps into the cabin. Sam almost fell overboard. Scott quickly climbed down from the mast.

‘Find the wet suits Sam. They’re under the bench seats, and put a life jacket on!’ Scott lashed the tiller to hold the boat steady. Sam slithered his way across the deck into the cabin. Christopher had already found the wet suits and was quickly tying on his life jacket.
